DR MATSANGA DAVID; INTEGRATION IS THE ONLY PANECEA FOR AFRICAN DEVELOPMENT.
INTEGRATION IS THE ONLY PANECEA FOR AFRICAN DEVELOPMENT.
By Dr.David Mazi Nyekorach -Matsanga
I will begin my struggle for Africa tonight with the African unity. African integration is no longer a matter of choice, but that of necessity.
My dream is to have an Africa without borders and without passports . That is what Nyerere wanted.
Against an international backdrop of changing political and economic priorities in America, Europe and Asia, Africa must plot a new course for its industrialisation and economic development, using the momentum of regional integration.
For Africa, a vast continent of over 1.2 billion resilient people, integration has considerable potential not only for promoting robust and equitable economic growth through markets, but also for reducing conflict and enhancing trade liberalisation.
This has already been quite manifested through the EAC and ECOWAS, who have taken their will for regional integration a notch higher.
Already, we have seen the fruits the quintessential role played by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania in bolstering peace in Ethiopia, Sudan and the Democratic Republic Of Congo. So far, most volatile in the region.
It must never be forgotten that security is the bloodline of any functional economy, without which movement of goods, service and people cannot happen, essentially crippling trade.
Africa harbors a lot of latent potential if integration was to be an absolute success and ptiority . Recent research by the African Development Bank shows that intra-African trade is the lowest of all global regions.
The fingures of trade show that approximately 15%, compared to 54% in the North American Free Trade Area, 70% within the European Union and 60% in Asia. These are the realities of what is happening to our continent.
However, time has proven that African integration is not a means upon its end, to accelerate the integration, the priority of economic integration must be balanced by those of social, cultural and political integration.
All African countries have to achieve a level field in the aforementioned metrics.Policy instruments, especially for overlapping African member nations, need to be harmonised.
Currently, weak enforcement of existing treaties and non-tariff barriers continue to hinder and choke free movement of goods, services and persons across African borders.
If African leaders can effectively crack the puzzle of integration through working together, we can foster a continent that can solve its challenges. From climate change, poverty, unemployment, inequality, and more.
I agree with Prrsident Museveni on the economic intergration of Africa. African nations should share a common dream of building a better Africa for all.
That common dream Must be to improve the quality of life for citizens and ensure that they have the skills to sustain themselves, their families, so as the economy to compete and trade fairly with other countries.
This can only be achieved through African integration.
Thanks
