CS ADEN DUALE PRESIDES OVER THE OPENING SESSION OF TARGET 3 AT UN HEADQUARTERS NAIROBI
Cabinet Secretary Hon. Aden Duale today presided over the opening session of the Sub-regional capacity-building workshop on Target 3 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework(KMGBF) for Central, Southern and Eastern Africa at UN Headquarters, Nairobi.

Biodiversity is the foundation of our ecosystem services, underpinning food security, health, livelihoods, and resilience to climate change.

The conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity are crucial for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and for ensuring the well-being of our current and future generations.

Themed" High Ambition Coalition for Nature and People",the three day-worskshop seeks to support the implementation of aspects of the programme of work on Article 8(j) and other provisions of the Convention on Biological Diversity related to indigenous peoples and local communities to 2030 in relation to Target 3 of the KMGBF.

The unprecedented climate change challenges, including habitat destruction, pollution, and over-exploitation of natural resources, are threatening our biodiversity, necessitating the need for 'action now'

"It is imperative that we come together, share our experiences, and collaborate on strategies and build our capacities to help us mitigate these threats and promote biodiversity conservation", Hon. Duale said .

The CS said that KMGBF presents a strategic roadmap for Kenya to halt and reverse biodiversity loss, with a key objective being to restore at least 30% of degraded terrestrial, inland water, and marine ecosystems by 2030.

Target 3 holds profound significance for Africa, calling for the effective conservation and management of at least 30% of the planet’s terrestrial and marine areas by 2030.

Kenya's 15bn Tree Growing flagship project is a necessity aimed towards expanding and strengthening protected areas, promoting sustainable land-use planning, and integrating biodiversity into the national policies.

"Further, Kenya has undertaken a robust process of integrating its National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP), with the overarching goals of the KMGBF.

Consequently, Kenya developed and submitted its national targets consistent with the 23 global targets, and also developed the national indicators.

This process will enable the evaluation of conservation measures' effectiveness, allowing policymakers to adjust strategies as needed."CS added.

Hon Duale, who was accompanied by Ministry's Head of Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs), Ms. Linda Kosgei, recognized that achieving Target 3 must be done in harmony with the national development plans-Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) and in full recognition of the rights of our people.

The CS underscored the workshop as a platform to engage in meaningful dialogue, share best practices, and develop transformational policies that reflect Africa’s realities.

Speaking to the delegates at the workshop ,Hon Duale called upon all African states to reaffirm their commitment to the Global Biodiversity Framework and to Target 3.

"We must work together to create a future where biodiversity conservation is not seen as an obstacle to development but rather as a driver of sustainable growth."CS concluded.

Several dignitaries attended the workshop among them Ms. Doreen Robinson (UNEP Director,Biodiversity and Land),Fred Kwame(Vice President,African Wildlife Foundation) as well as representative from the CBD Secretariat,Ms. Sakhile Koketso.
