Department of Transport, Infrastructure and Governance Has Had a Good Year. More to Be Done in 2026
DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORT, INFRASTRUCTURE AND GOVERNANCE HAS HAD A GOOD YEAR. MORE TO BE DONE IN 2025
In 2025, the Department delivered significant milestones that not only strengthened urban mobility, improved public safety, emergency response, and focus on vertical infrastructure, all anchored on modern, safe, and inclusive development.
SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY.
1. A total of 9.5 km access roads upgraded to cabro standards across the County, improving connectivity & service delivery for all.
2. Mombasa Cycle Network launched along Links and Fidel Odinga Roads, promoting non-motorised transport and safer mobility.
3. Traffic signals re-installed at Sabasaba & Buxton intersections, enhancing road safety & traffic flow.
GOVERNANCE, SAFETY AND EMERGENCY SERVICES.
1. Fire & Inspectorate Services were merged to one Directorate of Governance - a move aimed at strengthening coordination & operational efficiency.
2. A total of 180 new Inspectorate recruits hired, trained, & deployed to various functions within Government.
3. The Mombasa Marine Rescue & Recovery Unit was established - expanding emergency response capacity in our coastal and marine environments.
4. The County Rescue and Recovery capability was enhanced through acquisition of new fire-fighting and recovery equipment.
5. Enhanced fire & Evacuation drills were regularly conducted in public and private spaces to improve preparedness and safety awareness.
VERTICAL INFRASTRUCTURES.
1. Mjambere Level 4 Hospital is near completion - set to expand access to healthcare & decongest our referral facilities..
2. Bofu Level 2 Hospital is also near completion, and is aimed at improving primary healthcare in Bofu.
3. The Maganda Ultra-Modern Early Childhood Development (ECD) Centre is near completion - aimed at supporting quality early learning.
4. The Kiembeni Fire & Rescue Centre, nearing completion, and will go along way in boosting emergency response coverage around nothern mainland areas.
GLOBAL RECOGNITION.
1. Mombasa won the Global Speed Challenge, securing a grant now dedicated to improving school-zone safety and protecting children.
2. Mombasa hosted the The Global Road Safety Leadership Course, 2025. The annual couse is a collaboration of Road Safety partners led by Bloomberg Philanthropies
STAFF CAPACITY BUILDING & ACCREDITATIONS.
1. Four (4) engineers and one (1) accredited, the highest ever in since devolution.
2. A technical team to South Korea on an ITS exchange program.
3. A technical team to Beijing, China on a BRI program.
4. A technical team to Cape Town, SA on Livable Cities Program under Urban Flooding Resillence Infrastructure for African Cities.
These milestones reflect H.E Gov. Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir commitment to safe infrastructure, effective governance, public safety, and inclusive service delivery.
