GARISSA COUNTY COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT WATCHDOG GROUP CALLS FOR TARMACKING OF GARISSA-LIBOI ROAD

As Garissa County Community Development, our main aim and sole responsibility are broad and touching on many aspect including but not limited to social, political, economic and good governance agitation and as well versed activist, one of our key responsibilities is to raise issues of great importance to the great people of Garissa county especially matters development.

We would like to urge all the elected political leaders, public, both national and county governments, activists, development crusaders and all the stakeholders to join us ,Garissa County Community Development Watchdog as we embark on an ambitious campaign to lobby and open an advocacy for tarmacking of GARISSA-LIBOI road which has been in dire state for decades.

The government of Kenya announced 7 years go that they are seeking financing for the proposed road that would link Kenya with Somalia. The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) pronounced that designs had been completed for a proposed road connecting Garissa to Liboi. No tarmacked road currently exists connecting Garissa to Liboi, though dirt tracks which turn to swamps during rainy season exist.

On advocating bravely for this important road to be fully done, Garissa County Community Development Watchdog Group will actively seek audience with all the stakeholders in sector. There will be notable events and activities including a walk from Garissa to Liboi , breakfast meeting with key development partners, submitting an official petition to the president to support the intitiave and rigorous but fruitful campaign and
engagement with Garissa county political leaders,

Our main objective for pursuing active campaign, lobbying and advocating for the tarmacking of this road is its importance.
>The road would increase trade between Kenya and Somalia
>It will lead to greater infrastructure development. >Improved transport corridor would enhance Kenya’s security posture in the region and allow the more rapid movement of troops to and from the border region.
>The proposed Garissa-Liboi road is a minor part of the Lamu Port-Southern Sudan-Ethiopia Transport (LAPSSET) Corridor, a transport and infrastructure project that will cross northern Kenya, connecting the country to Uganda, Ethiopia, South Sudan and Somalia via roads, pipelines and other infrastructure projects.
>It will be the Kenya's alternative transport corridor when completed.
>The prospect of Kenyan security officials and troops manning the border in an organized and coordinated fashion as well as an upsurge in trade and income could go a long way
>A tarmacked road opens up a viable transportation corridor between Kenya and Somalia and will prove useful in stemming the perennial threat from al-Shabaab, not only in northeastern Kenya but throughout the country.

Garissa County Community Development Watchdog Group will not rest till it realises its dream of ensuring this road is completed sooner than later. We will pursue it with passion.

Those who love Garissa county and who are interested with to join or be part of the advocacy to liaise and register with the group.
