MOMBASA COUNTY FIRE DEPARTMENT UNDERTOOK COMMUNITY DISASTER MANAGEMENT TRAINING

Disaster preparedness consists of a set of measures undertaken in advance by governments, organisations, communities, or individuals to better respond and cope with the immediate aftermath of a disaster, whether it be human-induced or caused by natural hazards. The objective is to reduce the loss of life and livelihoods.

In line with their determination to ensure they are ready and well prepared for any future disaster or safety concerns, the Mombasa County Fire brigade in conjuction with Kenya Red cross mombasa branch undertook a Community disaster preparedness and response program aimed at reducing effects of disasters, improving the resilience of community in coping with disasters.

The main focus of the awareness campaign was First Aid and Fire suppresion. The Mombasa Fire brigade focused on researched common domestic fire scenarios which include fires caused by unattended LPG cookers, kerosene stoves and charcoal powered cookers in Miritini Jomvu sub county Mombasa.

A target community reach 150 members was set and reached with the help of Community Disaster Management Committees ( CDMC )of that settlement of miritini.

TUDOR WARD AND THE SPILLAGE OF RAW SEWAGE INTO HOUSES POINTS TO POOR DRAINAGE SYSTEMS.  The people of Tudor Four have been neglected by the County Government of Mombasa. They are up in arms over raw sewage spilling of into their houses as the drainages are yet be unclogged.  They said they have appealed to Governor Abdulswamad but he has so far ignored them. The sewage has submerged part of the road forcing pedestrians to look for alternative routes. "So the county government has preference of which area to help or not? Why is Tudor ward not getting the services we deserve? Salim Abdalla said. He warned the Governor that they will not vote for him again since he no longer treats all areas the same. The ongoing heavy rains has exposed the weaknesses of the County Government of Mombasa especially it's preparedness to tackle flood related issues.
