Mombasa County leadership Meets with Matatu Owners Associations

MOMBASA COUNTY LEADERSHIP MEETING WITH MATATU OWNERS ASSOCIATIONS

H.E Governor Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir along with my colleague CECM Transport and Public Works Mr. Dan Manyala had the honor of hosting the Matatu Owners Association led by their newly elected National Chairman Mr. Albert Karakacha and Chief Executive Officer Ms. Patricia Mutheu when they paid me a courtesy visit.

Also present were the local officials from the umbrella body.

Among the significant topics discussed was the County Government's decision to waive interest and penalties on parking fees for a two-week period. This measure aims to raise public awareness and understanding regarding the enforcement of parking fees in all designated areas. The county government is committed to fostering a mutually beneficial cooperation with all stakeholders and acknowledge the public interest surrounding this issue.

During the meeting, several interventions were highlighted. The County Government of Mombasa administration has planned to improve traffic management in the county. This includes but not limited to restricting the movement of heavy commercial vehicles during peak hours on the northern mainland, specifically on the new Mombasa - Malindi Road, Links Road, and Old Mombasa - Malindi Road, due to ongoing construction. Additionally, we are in discussions with KBC (VOK) and KPA (adjacent to the Ferry) to utilize their land for constructing bus termini. This will ensure organized accommodation of public service vehicles, thereby enhancing safety and traffic management.

Furthermore, we have initiated discussions with the National Transport and Safety Authority to establish a partnership. This partnership aims to provide training and sensitization programs on road safety for public service vehicle operators, as well as facilitating formal licensing and certification processes handled by the county government.
